I used to work as an in-house creative for an eCommerce company. I was head of the creative team working on an ATL and social media campaign when a job dropped in my inbox that I was highly unqualified for (but I didn’t know that then).

Pop-ups and paywalls have long been the bane of UX designers across the world. No user wants to fend off advances from unwelcome pop-ups asking them to sign up to newsletters, allow cookies, download that free e-book or even more annoyingly, shut off that pop-up blocker. For UX designers a pop-up or a paywall can mean that users never get to experience their work beyond the first 2 seconds when they decide to abandon ship.

It’s no secret that the world has always favoured right-handed users over left-handed users when it comes to product design. Whether it’s a mobile app or something as simple as a writing desk, left-handed users have always lamented the fact that they are usually an afterthought.

According to UX design experts, usability patterns, finger and thumb patterns change when it comes to right or left-handed use (Cornelia, 2014). Below is a representation extracted from heat maps that indicates the surface area covered by left and right-handed use.

I was stood outside the stalls in the girl’s bathroom. Obscene artworks by untrained hands lined the walls. The stalls, on the other hand, served as our daily gossip bulletins. My best friend was sequestered in one such stall.
